Support images, and because search-engine spiders cannot read the content of an image, optimizing images presents an extra avenue to squeeze in more content. Links provide the pathways that search-engine spiders need to find your Web pages. Creating these links with search-engine optimization in mind is necessary for optimal results. Throughout the Web page creation process, try to adhere to the standards set forth by the World Wide Web Consortium. The consortium works to create standards in Web design and development that ensure Internet-wide compatibility.

The do-it-yourself route is not for everyone, especially when designing something as important as custom artwork for your iPhone app icon, logo, and user interface. It's important to remember that Photoshop, Illustrator, and other graphics programs are merely tools. Those tools are only as useful as your ability to wield them. To put the tools to good use, you must have the creativity and patience to translate the ideas from
Don't overlook the value of sketches on grid paper Getting your ideas down on paper is a quick way to map out the basic look and feel of your app. Designing a game that requires a completely custom interface Drawing your concept on paper may be your only rapid option, since this would be impossible to do with only the standard controls available in Interface Builder. Sketch it first by hand to work out the design kinks, and then construct the final custom artwork in Illustrator or Photoshop. Erik Loehfelm's iPhone UX Sketch Templates (offered in multiple formats such as PDF, Photoshop, EPS, PNG, and OmiGraffle) Boulevart's iPhone Sketchpaper (PDF and Photoshop PSD) Beautiful Mock-ups in Illustrator and Photoshop If drawing on paper is not your thing and you're more comfortable working in Photoshop or Illustrator, other resourceful designers have graciously donated comprehensive sets of interface elements to the iPhone developer community, conveniently stored in layered files, making...
The concept of copyrighting an app is a little misleading because it implies that obtaining copyright protection for your work requires you to take proactive measures to have protection. In fact, in the United States and most other countries that follow the Berne Convention, some degree of copyright protection is established automatically the moment you put pen to paper (or start working in Photoshop or Xcode), assuming the thing you are creating is original to you. Copyright protects original works of authorship. This includes literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works, such as poetry, novels, movies, songs, computer software, and architecture. In the case of iPhone applications copyright can provide protection for your source code, graphics, and sound effects in your app the text of your instructions app description or creative video or audio content that you bundle with your app. Copyright does not protect facts, ideas, systems, or methods of operation, but if those facts,...
For example, if your app is managed by a navigation controller or tab bar controller, then add that controller to your window in Interface Builder. In Xcode, write only the controller code necessary to enable moving from one screen to the next. Don't worry about recreating the individual UI controls in every screen. If you've already created mock-ups of your app's various screens in Photoshop, Illustrator, or some other graphics editor, then simply crop and save those screens as PNG files. Import those PNG files into your Xcode project. By adding new subviews with Ullmages to display each PNG file, those temporary Ullmages can serve as dummy placeholders for those screens in Interface Builder (see Figure 4-9). Figure 4-9. Create quick prototypes by adding a minimum amount of navigation code needed to move from one screen to the next. Each screen subview can be faked by displaying Photoshop PNG files of your interface mock-ups in Ullmages. Figure 4-9. Create quick prototypes by adding...

Take some time to explore the App Store product pages of popular apps and games and analyze the first primary screenshot for each one, especially similar apps that will compete with yours. When you see a screenshot that catches your eye, try to determine what it is that makes it an effective graphic. On the surface, it may appear that the winning attributes are simply a stunning interface design, but look closer. Many of the best primary screenshots are ones that have been set up to look good No, I don't mean Photoshop enhancements. I'm talking about showing the app in action If it's a to-do list app, then don't show a new, empty list. Fill it with tasks that your target audience can relate to, demonstrating just how productive and timesaving it could be for them. If it's a space battle game, display the key fun factors like laser guns firing and alien crafts exploding You want the reaction to be, Wow, that looks exciting I must buy it now Apple recommends removing the status bar from...

Finally, the photos you post of your auction item are probably the most important aspect of your eBay auction. These are what eBay users are looking for when they browse the listings in fact, most people filter the search results to show only items that include images. Again, make sure the image is the right size. Large, detailed images take too long to load and deter users with slower connection speeds. It is also faster to host your photos off of the eBay site. Web sites like Photobucket allow you to host your photos for free and even provide you with the proper code to cut and paste right into your auction.
The time spent studying and emulating successful marketing ideas is the most valuable investment you can make in your business. Take away all my photography skills, my Photoshop knowledge, my entire studio, but let me keep my marketing skills, and I'll have it all back in no time. Take away my marketing skills and I'll be stuck at the bottom of the barrel until the bankruptcy court finally calls.
A group of 20 businesses form an organization that meets once a month so that all 20 can brainstorm strategic alliances with each other. A convenience store might make a deal to provide shelf space for a video rental store, a fitness centre can place 'take-one' boxes in which any one of the other businesses can place their fliers. This group of 20 can also sponsor its own community involvement program to help charities and other good causes. By pooling resources, significant money can be raised - and those who receive the money can be the core customers of all 20 members. Then each company can remind everyone, including the media, about all the good works they are doing. This will result in free press for all 20, and will touch individuals on a personal level. This can create powerful word-of-mouth advertising. That kind of reputation and image enhancement is all but priceless.
This web site should be a required stop for all software developers. It provides helpful online tools for revealing color problems in your applications. Upload screenshots of your interface into the online Vischeck simulator to see how your UI design will look through color-deficient eyes. Upload screenshots to the online Daltonize tool to color-correct your interface for the three most common color deficiencies. The site also offers downloads of the Vischeck simulator as a free Photoshop plug-in for testing your interface screenshots directly within Photoshop.

After you've come up with an awesome idea for your app, draw out exactly how users will interact with it. Don't worry if you don't think you can draw in fact, the worse you are at making pretty pictures, the better off you'll be when creating mockups. Use a pen and paper (markers work great for this since they force you to forget the details and focus on the overarching structures) or a digital tool such as Balsamiq Mockups, Adobe Photoshop, or even Microsoft PowerPoint. Block out the most important features and user actions and get this mockup in front of potential users as early as you can. Even without a functioning prototype, you'll be surprised at how many great insights you'll get. Draw these fast and don't get too attached to any individual version you shouldn't be afraid to throw them out and start over.
At one tenth the price of Adobe Photo Shop, Jasc's Paint Shop Pro sports nearly all Photo Shop's features. It is also extremely easy to use and is a much lighter program to load and run. The latter attribute is critical, as I need to have my HTML editor, FTP program, several browser windows and Paint Shop Pro open all at the same time. Paint Shop Pro is therefore my graphics program of choice. Paint Shop Pro

Prototypes are trial versions of a web site that are gradually refined through an iterative process to become closer to the final version. Initial prototypes may simply be paper prototypes, perhaps of a 'wireframe' or screen layout. These may then be extended to include some visuals of key static pages using a tool such as Adobe Photoshop. Finally, working prototypes will be produced as HTML code is developed. The idea is that the design agency or development team and the marketing staff who commissioned the work can review and comment on prototypes, and changes can then be made to the site to incorporate these comments. Prototyping should result in a more effective final site which can be developed more rapidly than a more traditional approach with a long period of requirements determination.
