Advertising hardware tests

A few experimental measuring devices have been applied in communications or advertising research. The method involves connecting the respondent to the appropriate piece of hardware, which measures the degree of reaction. Inevitably, such experiments can only be conducted on a small scale, and the artificiality of the laboratory type of situation under which the experiment is conducted gives rise to the concern that the results cannot be validly generalized to the real-world situation under which advertisements are normally seen. However, given the very high levels of media expenditure necessary for mass-advertised products, it seems reasonable to attempt any possible experiments to ensure that the layout and content of the advertisement selected should be as effective as possible. These techniques are most useful in a minor diagnostic way, and are generally applied on a very small scale, if at all.
