Visual aids and their use

Use of visual aids such as chalkboards, flipboards and overhead transparencies should be made. Too many visuals, however, can become distracting and even boring. They should be used solely to clarify or reinforce a point. It is a mistake to believe that pictures are always better than words. Visual aids should only be used if they serve a real and necessary purpose.

Figure 12.2 illustrates an overhead transparency that can be prepared with a product such as Microsoft PowerPoint. It shows how a graphic presentation can be combined with key points expressed in words.

There is a wide range of graphical illustrations that can be used. The following gives some examples.
