Stages In The Development Of A Questionnaire

Identification and specification of the research problem/research objectives.

Selection of the population to be studied.

Choice of data collection: face to face, telephone, mail, computer approach.

Ordering of the topics to be addressed.

Establishing the required cross-tabulations.

Deciding how the topics will be covered - direct/indirect questions, open-ended questions, closed-ended questions - and how they will be precoded.

Questionnaire layout and the design of any supporting material, such as showcards.

Pretesting of the questionnaire to obtain feedback on the ordering of questions, responses to questions, instructions to interviewers, efficiency of layout and to assess the time taken by the interviewers and the cost of interviews.
