Questionnaire layout

Questionnaires should be easy to use and encourage the user either to answer questions posed by an interviewer or to self-complete. A questionnaire that is badly presented or printed is likely to cause non-response or measurement error. Design considerations include:

• using good-quality paper

• keeping the body of the questionnaire as trim as possible

• using spacing to break up text and improve its presentation

• using different typefaces to assist reading

• adding colour to promote interest

• using routeing and/or branching instructions to guide a respondent

• making it easy for respondents to answer the questions.
