Questionnaire design and construction

On reaching this stage in conducting a research study it is expected that the research problem has already been expressed in terms of an appropriate set of research questions. These questions have now to be put in a suitable format for the respondents to answer and then arranged into a questionnaire in a valid, logical fashion that will produce meaningful answers. Considerable thought needs to go into the process of constructing a questionnaire: it is not as simple as might appear at first sight. Indeed, the process involves going through the following sequence of steps (see also Figure 7.1):

1 preliminary considerations

2 question content

3 question phrasing

4 types of response format

5 question sequence

6 question layout

7 pretest, revision and final version of the questionnaire.
