External data

External data are data that come from a wide variety of sources outside an organisation. So numerous are the various forms of external data that in order to

use them effectively a researcher needs to be skilled in the use of indexes, abstracts and directories to locate relevant material. Without the use of these aids much time and effort is invariably wasted and much relevant information may be overlooked. (See Figure 3.1 for the interlinkage of these two types of data.)
