Cost of personal interviews

The per-interview cost of personal interviewing is the highest of any survey method. A considerable amount of non-productive time has to be paid for. The refusal rate is high, running anywhere from 5% to 30%. Moreover, more nonproductive time is spent returning for recall interviews where in-home or business interviews are sought. Indeed, if the potential respondent is in a business or profession, the time spent on the interview is often excessive. If an appointment has not been arranged in advance, many hours may be spent in a waiting room hoping for a session.
