Body of the report

The report body might include the following:

• a statement of the problem, perhaps slightly modified to allow for changes in instructions and changes caused by early findings in the research

• a brief account of how the research was conducted

• a detailed presentation of the findings, but only what is necessary for backing up the recommendations

• a list of the major recommendations

• a statement of the implications of the findings and recommendations for specific departments of the sponsoring company.

Objectivity in report writing is of paramount importance. It is a good idea to list the shortcomings of a study since most studies do in fact have them. Style of writing is most important. A research report needs to be sharp, clear and vivid. Simple words are usually best and jargon should be avoided.
