Keyword Research for SEO
Now you are going to do Keyword Research. You are going to come up with many words and phrases that your Merchant's customers might use when searching for the Merchant's products or services. The longer your list the better, because the more keyword phrases you have, the more visitors you can attract and the more money you can make. You will find that many of the most popular keywords are overpriced. Don't let that discourage you. You can attract click traffic for much less. Most advertisers think too narrowly, bidding only on the most popular words, which obviously drives up the price. But, with a little effort you can identify hundreds of keywords that cost only 5 cents per click. The key is in your keyword research. Find every combination of keywords that you can think of. We want to expand our keyword search. Have a look at these keyword combinations
If you are promoting candles, do not limit your keywords to candle, candles, etc. Expand your territory to users searching for interior design, lighting my home, and or energy efficient light. Expanding your keywords may also stop bidding wars. The ad space for candles may be extremely saturated, which increases your cost per click charge and likely decreases your chances of being clicked. Look up your competitors' keywords to get ideas of some words you might have missed. Look at the websites of other Affiliates of your Merchant and Competitors of your Merchant. Click on View and then click on Source. This shows you the HTML code for their webpage. Look for the meta keywords near the top. For example, here are the keywords on REI.com's page
You will want to create a Master Keyword List, which is simply a text file that has each keyword on one line. As you are doing your keyword research, add pertinent words to your master keyword list by copying and pasting them from the tool to your list. Make a long list. Group your keywords into relevant groups. Here are your Keyword Research Tools
The free version of the Wordtracker Keyword Suggestion Tool is limited to 100 results per search. However, the paid version gives you instant access to thousands of keywords, which can prove invaluable when building out large keyword lists for running a PPC account and when searching for supplemental keywords to use when constructing your content pages for SEO purposes. Another benefit of signing up for the paid version of Wordtracker is the ability to import a list of keywords and check their search volume. Instead of manually entering each keyword into the free tool one at a time, all you need to do is copy and paste your list into the paid version of the tool with one click you get the search volume estimates for every word. This alone can save you hours of time each month. As with Keyword Discovery, the paid version of Wordtracker also allows you to save your keyword projects for easy access later on down the road. This feature allows you not only to work ahead, but also to build...
2 Enter one or more keywords into the keyword variations field, placing one on each line. 3 Select Use Synonyms if you want Google to return common synonyms of your keywords as results. The Google AdWords Keyword Suggestion Tool, located at https adwords.google.com select KeywordToolExternal, is a free tool offered by Google that generates keywords based on a user entering descriptive words or phrases or a Web site URL. Because Google provides this tool, it has the unique advantage of being able to display a measure of advertiser competition. Advertiser competition is in reference to the amount of advertisers bidding on each term within the Google AdWords program. This is helpful in finding new keywords for use in your own PPC account, because the search volume appears right next to the advertiser competition. Keywords that have a fairly high search volume with a low competition rating can make perfect additions to your own keyword lists. The Google Keyword Suggestion Tool also shows...
Another extremely effective method for doing keyword research involves using the subscription fee-based Keyword Discovery research tool, located at www.keyworddiscovery.com. Keyword Discovery is available for a monthly or yearly subscription fee and offers a wealth of information to aid in your keyword research. With Keyword Discovery, you can generate a large list of head and tail terms for any topic you choose, including many industry terms you may not yet be aware of. The Keyword Discovery tool returns a large list of keywords that are related to the base keyword you use when performing a search. For example, by typing the base keyword cheese into Keyword Discovery you get a list of keywords that are related to your base keyword cheese. Your Keyword Discovery search report is sorted by search volume, starting with high volume head terms at the top of the list down to low volume tail terms at the bottom of your list. For example, head terms such as cheese and gourmet cheese appear...
When you come to the Brainstorm & Research -- Step 1 of 4 window, enter your Site Concept keyword (no typos ) where it says Enter your keyword here Do not brainstorm on super-general keywords like free or Web site -- seeds like this can only bring back a wide range of weeds or rubbish.
Wordtracker is an online keyword generator that builds lists of similar search terms from keywords entered by Internet users. The database is updated on a continuous basis for new search expressions and it contains more than 350 million search queries. As such, Wordtracker can be a valuable tool to gain insight into the public's most commonly used search phrases. Although Wordtracker is a paid subscription service, they do offer a free trial. Also free of charge is their weekly Keyword Report, which includes the top 500 frequently searched words on the Internet. The Keyword Reports are a great way to keep an eye on keyword search trends that indicate new and emerging topics of public interest. together to generate one result for the number of searches in a given month Wordtracker shows numbers for all the variables. For example, although thousands of people will morph the term 'wine making', into 'wine-making', 'winemaking' or even 'wine making', Overture will return results only for...
Keyword research serves two purposes. The first is to develop a list of keywords and phrases relevant to your topic. These keywords are used to compose the meta tags and text within your pages, and will therefore act as 'magnets' to attract the search engines. Another benefit of thorough keyword research, is the ability to assess demand for products and services on the Net. Certain tools allow us to see exactly how many times surfers enter a particular phrase or keyword over a period of time. Using those numbers we may judge them sufficient to build a site around that topic. Below are the tools I use to do keyword research for my affiliate sites. WordTracker Wordtracker.com is perhaps the best tool available to search for keywords and phrases relevant to your topic, as well as related keywords and phrases. Wordtracker's free weekly Keyword Reports are also a great way to keep an eye on keyword search trends that indicate new and emerging topics of public interest. Wordtracker is an...
Keyword Discovery offers a keyword filter tool that is incredibly useful when expanding on existing keywords for both PPC and SEO campaigns. The filter enables you to automatically add a prefix, suffix, or both to each keyword on a list, which is far more reliable than performing similar functions manually. In addition, the Keyword Discovery filter tool can accomplish time-consuming keyword edits and additions in seconds, saving you valuable time. Aside from the prefix and suffix additions, the filter tool also offers a mass find-and-replace tool, which is a valuable option for adding common synonyms into your keyword list. Using the Keyword Discovery filter tool to expand your preliminary keyword list is very helpful when building out a PPC account for an e-commerce site. For example, the filter tool allows you to easily insert descriptive prefixes and suffixes onto the base keywords that are commonly used when someone is searching with the intent to make a purchase. Adding prefixes...

The goal of search-engine optimization is to make sure that your Web site ranks at the top of the search results when high-converting, target keywords related to your product or service are typed into popular search engines as search queries. Using proper keyword density is a process that includes the strategic repetition of select, target keywords and the minimization of nontarget keywords throughout your content, so that search engines deem your Web site relevant to search queries that you want to rank for. Proper keyword density is a fundamental component of on-site search-engine optimization. By using available tools to maximize optimal keyword density, you can incorporate a substantial number of target keywords through your content without compromising the natural flow of the writing. Keyword density tools allow you to minimize the over repetition of nontarget keywords, while ensuring that you have the proper density of your target keywords. Using Proper Keyword Density...
When you first created keyword lists you simply used a 'single' word that represented, - in a general way, - the industry you were considering. So go back to Wordtracker and simply enter each merchant category separately, - rather than searching the whole industry with one fell swoop, - as you did initially. Then go to step 3 of the Wordtracker process to review. What you end up with is 5-6 sets of beautifully organized keyword lists for each product page. This saves you a lot of time and simplifies the task of sorting your keywords into different groups. Here is the individual keyword list I created for the clay poker chips product page. Here are the results of your Wordtracker query selected from a database of 401 million search engine results. for an explanation of each of the headings. Because with your 5-6 lists in front of you, - you can easily see at a quick glance, - which words will serve as the best choices for Primary and Tier-1 Secondary keywords.
Keyword Optimization all begins with the proper selection of each pages' Primary keyword. You are looking for the absolute best keyword to fully optimize for each Product Page. Experience has taught me that you are FAR better off choosing a Primary Keyword that was searched only 200 times last month, - if by choosing it you had a decent shot at a top-10 placement at Google (and the other search engines), - rather than feverishly optimizing for that 'very special word' that gets searched 2,000 times a month, - only to have no traffic at all because everybody and his brother is also optimizing for that very same keyword. The Google PageRank and Backward Link checks are the benchmark you use to decide whether or not to pass on any given word as your PRIMARY keyword.
Keyword Discovery includes several useful advanced features that enable you to analyze your lists of keywords, including information on the number of occurrences of a keyword throughout a Web site, overall keyword effectiveness, and predicted daily search volume. Keyword Discovery advanced features allow you to achieve a better understanding of what keyword rankings are realistically available, and the directions in which your SEO work is most likely to achieve positive results. Keyword Discovery's number-of-occurrences feature provides an estimated number of pages that use a given keyword. The higher this number, the more pages there are likely competing for the top organic positions for the keyword. Generally speaking, a lower number is better for your Web site. Keyword Discovery's keyword effectiveness indicator, or KEI, is a simplified value scale from 0 to 10 that provides Analyze Keywords with Keyword Discovery Keyword Discovery's predicted-daily-searches feature provides you...
Once you've decide upon which word to FULLY optimize as your Primary Keyword for each Product Page, you can now more easily decide on which one other keyword phrase will serve as Tier-1 secondary keywords. As a reminder, here is my definition of a Tier-1 secondary keyword Tier-1 Secondary keyword - one other keyword phrase (the next best) that will be partially optimized as 'spider food' for any page you add to your site by including them with the Primary keyword wherever possible. Later you will see the rules for inserting Tier-1 Secondary keywords to both your text and your HTML. 2. It should be similar to your Primary Keyword, - but if it's a phrase, then try to avoid duplication of your Primary keyword. 3. As with your Primary keyword you will need to do a PageRank and Backward Links check.
All you do is select similar, but different words from your keyword list and enter them into your chart as reference material while writing content for your pages. The only time you would optimize for them is to include them in the META tags along with your Primary and Secondary keywords. The fact is, that if you write numerous Article pages, then these Tier-2 Secondary keywords will ultimately be optimized as Primary and Tier-1 Secondary keywords anyway, - as you drill down your keyword list.
Tools are available to help you choose the best keywords for your site and discover new keywords based on historical searches that have been performed in the search engines. Some of these tools are free, and some have a small one-time cost or an ongoing subscription fee associated with them. The best tool available for mobile keyword research is part of Google AdWords, Google's advertising platform. It is a bit difficult to access, but it is free and high quality, so it is worth the struggle. 11. Next, AdWords takes you to a page that is meant for developing a keyword list. Under the AdGroups heading, click Mock Campaign. New options appear on the right site of the screen. In the text above the white box, click Keyword Tool, as shown in Figure 10.4). (Yes, I know this is a lot of work you're almost done ) 12. Now, you move to a page that looks exactly like the traditional Google AdWords Keyword Tool, except for one small modification the sentence that reads Results Are Tailored to...
After you have developed a list of keywords that you want to rank for, it is important to know how well you already rank for them in search results. It is a good idea to set a benchmark and routinely record how your website is performing in mobile search engines. If you already have a website, the first thing you might do is go to your phone and perform searches to see where your website ranks on the first page. This will give you a good basic idea of how your website is performing in mobile search results. However, it is not comprehensive or 100 representative because the search engines, especially Google, are adjusting results based on several factors, as described in the following sections.
Many visitors will find your site by entering a keyword phrase (I.e. portable charcoal grills) at one of the major search engines. These keyword phrases, can be looked at by us. as a quasi-type of question, - giving us clues as to what is in the mind of the visitor. For example, someone who enters the keyword phrase portable charcoal grills is obviously interested in a grill that uses charcoal for fuel that is portable. Look at a cross-section of my BBQ keyword list below. As you will see, these are really clues to what exactly my visitors are looking for. Think about what each person may have wanted to know when they typed in the keyword phrases.
As the process goes on, you'll find yourself making your MASTER KEYWORD LIST better and better dropping the less interesting and less PROFITABLE words, and brainstorming new ones (either with the Brain tool, or one-by-one, as they occur to you -- see DAY 3 above for details). And odds are, as your site starts to reach its reasonable limit of 200 or so pages (plus dupe pages), entirely new Site Concept keywords will have occurred to you. Brainstorm them and bring them into temporary.com.
If you really want to get your site onto the crucial first page of search results in your category, you are going to have to display the fistful of trump words and phrases that carry the most clout. In advertising, these might be new, amazing, free. On a golf site, the top keywords might be Tiger Woods or U.S. Open. Source www.wordtracker.com, February 9, 2005 Source www.wordtracker.com, February 9, 2005 Repeating top keywords on each page may seem like a good idea. It certainly hooks the eye. However, done heavy handedly, this is called spamdexing. The moment the search engines realize you are besieging them, their automatic reaction is to demote or remove such pages or sites. Tip To avoid rewriting, select your keywords before you write the copy.
One of the most effective methods for generating keywords is to evaluate what keywords your competition is bidding for on major pay-per-click search engines such as Google AdWords and Yahoo Search Marketing. Competitive research tools such as KeyCompete.com, which typically charge a monthly or annual membership fee, enable you to see the specific keywords your competition is bidding on, while also giving you access to useful keyword generation data. Generating competitor keyword lists using KeyCompete can be done using four primary strategies depending on how many keywords your competitor is bidding on and how granular you want your keyword generation research to be. One way KeyCompete allows you to evaluate competitors' keywords is by typing a competitor's Web site URL directly into the KeyCompete system. Using the URL method allows you to quickly access thousands of competitor keywords at any one time. However, the KeyCompete Keyword Research with KeyCompete technology does not...
After selecting a Web site topic, keyword generation is the first and arguably most important step of the search-engine-optimization, or SEO, process. The bulk of your Web site, from the directory and file names to the title tags and page copy, is built around the words and phrases you choose during the keyword generation phase. The process of keyword generation is very important to a successful SEO campaign and should never be rushed or taken lightly. Initially, you want to generate a potential keyword list that is as large as possible, with the keywords organized by search volume. Volume refers to the number of searches performed on a unique keyword over a period of time. A large list ensures that you have a healthy mix of keyword terms. Selecting only keywords with little search volume, or keywords with rankings dominated by established authority sites, could spell disaster for your SEO efforts before they have even gotten off the ground. In this chapter, you learn about various...
Let's continue by using the credit card example from earlier. Remember, in order to find the most possible keyword combinations, you need to start with the general keywords from your list. As you exhaust your list of general keywords, you can use the specific keywords from your list to find even more variations. I'm going to start by using the keyword citi . This search will yield the most keyword variations Figure 3.3.2.a Yahoo Keyword Selector Tool Keyword Selector Tool These keywords will make nice additions to our keyword list. They also provide us with an opportunity to find more keyword variations.
You may need to perform a few keyword searches to find the best grouping of specific keywords that relate to your site. For instance, you already tried doing a search for the keyword fitness. This returned a ton of listings but 98 of them were too general or too difficult to tie-in to your personal training service in a natural way. For example, you could target the keyword phrase ab exercise (the 4th most popular keyword on the list) and write a great article about the relationship between strong abdominal muscles and a pain-free healthy back, important injury-prevention knowledge to have as people age.
To analyze the keywords from the B&R session, look at results from different points of view. Click on the label to sort your keywords alphabetically, like Click on the u '' L label to sort your keywords by SUPPLY, like this Click on the ability label to sort your keywords by PROFITABILITY, like this. Click on the ability label to sort your keywords by PROFITABILITY, like this. You'll get the most out of sorting according to PROFITABILITY and DEMAND. The best keywords to use are
Earlier in this manual you developed a keyword list at Wordtracker that may, or may not serve your purposes well enough to act as a narrowly targeted keyword list for the industry you have decided to pursue. The reason I say that is, - while working with students previously, - I witnessed that in nearly every case their initial keyword lists were too general in nature. When first venturing into Wordtracker most have only a vague idea of the role of these keywords or the industry they plan to pursue. Can you see 5-6 keywords in the top 20-30 words that could serve well as Primary keywords Can you see how the above Poker Chip merchant categories would serve you well if those exact phrases showed up near the top of your keyword list Each could then be the Primary keyword for a product page about that subject, - as well as the perfect choice for a navigation bar button.
When choosing your top keywords, be sure to think in terms of phrases instead of single keywords. Searchers have become savvy enough to understand that broad, one-word searches, such as pizza, will rarely yield the desired result except in a map-based search. Optimizing for keyword combinations or phrases is more realistic and enables you to narrow the number of companies that you are competing against for search engine rankings. With this in mind, it is generally best to target two or three word phrases in your SEO. A good example of this strategy is a store that sells golf clubs in Miami. Instead of targeting golf, this company should target keyword phrases such as Miami golf shop, golf store Miami, Miami golf clubs, and so on. The natural benefit of targeting two- and three-word phrases is that when you start to rank and get traffic for the longer keyword phrases such as golf store miami, you will also begin to rank better for shorter versions of the keyword phrases, such as golf...
The search term that a user may enter at a search engine is called a 'keyword' or 'keyword phrase'. For example, someone who wants to find a site that sells Barbie dolls might enter 'Barbie dolls' at a search engine. Keyword research allows you to 2. Develop Keyword Lists - The second purpose of keyword research is to develop a list of keywords and phrases relevant to your topic. These keywords are used to build keyword-dense pages that act as 'magnets' to attract the search engines. If you plan to advertise your site, you'll also need a list of keywords and phrases to build pay-per-click advertising campaigns. (Pay-per-click advertising is covered in more depth in the chapter on marketing.) 3. Expand Your Concept - Lastly, keyword research will help you generate ideas that might not have crossed your mind otherwise. For example, if you are researching 'luggage', you may have listed the terms 'luggage, duffle, and backpack' but forgot to include 'tote'. Certain keyword research tools...
Figure 3.3.3.a Google Keyword Tool Keyword Variations Site-Related Keywords More specific keywords - sorted by relevance Keywords Add all 109 a More specific keywords - sorted by relevance Keywords Add all 109 a This search returned 109 keyword variations. You may notice that many of the keywords suggested by Google are different than the keywords suggested by Yahoo. For example, the keywords citicards , citicard , and citi card were not suggested by Yahoo. This is why its important to use both tools when doing keyword research. You don't want to miss out on any valuable keywords.
To increase the click-through rate of your ads, I recommend that you use dynamic keyword insertion. When you set up your Ad Groups, you write one ad for an entire group of keywords, as shown in Figure 5.3.2.b. The problem with this is that since you only have one ad, you can't use your all of your keywords in the ad copy this then negatively affects your click-through rate. To get around this problem, Google created dynamic keyword insertion. This allows you to dynamically insert your keyword into your ad copy when a user's search query contains that keyword. To use dynamic keyword insertion use the following syntax in your ad Figure 6.4.2.c Google Dynamic Keyword Insertion Example For example, if you were using dynamic keyword insertion and somebody searched for DaVinci Code, KeyWord Default Ad Text would be replaced with the keyword DaVinci Code as shown in this example Figure 6.4.2.d Google Dynamic Keyword Insertion Example Many new advertisers will create separate Ad Groups for...
Perhaps the least important factor in optimizing a Web site for search-engine rankings is the use of the meta keyword tag. Similar to the meta description tag, the meta keyword tag contains a list of keywords or phrases, separated by commas, that describe the subject matter of a particular Web page. Today, the search engines give little consideration to meta keyword tags. Still, you should not skip implementing this tag on all your Web pages. What sort of significance the search engines may place on this tag in the future is impossible to know, and although you are not likely to see an increase in your rankings with today's ranking algorithms, anything is possible down the road. In the mid-1990s, back when search engines were much less sophisticated and had much less computing power, the meta keyword tag was used by the search engines to determine what keywords and phrases a Web page should rank for. As you can imagine, it did not take long before Optimize Meta Keyword Tags (hrrn...
Before you create your paid search ads, I recommend you take a few minutes to put your keywords and Destination URLs into a spreadsheet. When you are creating your ads, you can simply copy and paste the Destination URLs from your spreadsheet into your paid search campaign. You may have noticed that a few of the keyword phrases from this spreadsheet example contain two words (online dating, meet men, and meet women). Whenever your keywords consist of two or more words you must combine the words with a + sign in your Destination URL. This is because URLs should not contain spaces. Once you have assigned a Destination URL to each of your keywords, you can add them to your paid search campaigns. To learn how to use unique Destination URLs with your keywords in Google AdWords, follow the instructions on Google's website By default, Yahoo allows you to create a separate ad and unique Destination URL for each of your keywords when you create a new campaign. If you decided to use the same URL...
Effective keyword generation is one of the most critical elements of successful search-engine optimization. All keywords are not created equal some keywords are easier to rank for than others, and some keywords tend to be almost impossible to rank for. Broad or general keywords tend to be highly competitive and therefore should represent only a small portion of your overall SEO efforts. Specific keywords, which include those keywords that describe your specific product or service and are more than three keywords in length, are less competitive and therefore should make up the bulk of your keyword generation efforts. There are numerous useful keyword generation tools that can help you discover effective keywords for your Web site. Keyword generation tools such as Keyword Discovery, Wordtracker, and Google's Keyword Suggestion Tool allow you to carefully research, analyze, and filter potential keywords. It is not enough to just generate massive lists of keywords. Instead, your keyword...
I am going to share with you the keyword density rules that I have been using since the end of 2004 with much success. As you will see, they are worth learning. a. Optimize each page for keyword density by including your Primary and Tier-1 Secondary keywords Primary Keyword Once in your headline. Once in the first paragraph. Used nowhere else on the page. Tier-1 Secondary Keywords Once in the first or second paragraph. Used nowhere else on the page. Use Keyword Variations These are individual words that are based on your Primary & Secondary keywords. (further explanation and examples to follow) They should be used repeatedly in the following density. b. Randomly included your Tier-2 Secondary keywords throughout the text in no particular density, but added only as they would naturally appear editorially. 1) Keyword Variations Explained Varying up your keywords is important because Google now uses stemming technology, as they explain at http www.google.com help basics.html (excerpt...
The Yahoo and Google Keyword tools are helpful for getting started with keyword research. They offer the basic functionality that you need to build a good keyword list however, they lack some of the advanced features that other keyword tools offer. In addition to Yahoo and Google's free keyword tools I use WordTracker and KeywordDiscovery. Most Internet Marketing experts I have talked to use one or the other, but I personally use both so that I can find as many keywords as possible and compare the traffic between both. Seasonal trends (Keyword Discovery only)
And that's critical because I actually have a side site, that has really nothing to do with internet marketing and oddly enough, this is what eased me into more of the targeted marketing as well as it was just a sort of fun website that I did on my own, it's a hobby of mine. I would say it's not a very popular keyword. But yet I was getting a lot of click-throughs on it and also had some fairly high search engine results and then started to see Google AdSense numbers
I then logged in to Google Adwords and setup an Ad for Germany only. This is very easy to do. You just choose the country in which you want your ad to show (more on this in Step 6 pg65). I set it up so that the ad displayed for the keywords ebay, ebay.de, ebay Deutschland, cds, dvds, etc. (keywords I found from my keyword research). My ad will only show up on German Google which is www.Google.de. Here is the Ad
That's a really good question and I tell you, I really believe that you should pick something that you really like. And I think this is pretty important, because I think I see a lot of people now that I'm getting more experienced in this and I've talked to some people in this industry, and what you see is that a lot of people get excited about popular keywords that they have absolutely no interest in, and they put sites up there and they might do something on it, but what you don't get is the staying power.
Quality score optimization, or QSO, is a set of strategies for improving quality score. Quality score is a principal ranking factor that search engines use to determine your relative ranking and pricing for a particular keyword listing. In today's PPC advertising environment, the highest bidder does not always win. Instead, Google and other leading search engines rank Web sites based on numerous quality factors, and use your designated maximum cost per click as only one of many factors that determine whether you achieve a given keyword placement. The goal of QSO is to understand the factors that Google and others use to calculate quality score so that you can maintain PPC advertisements at the highest possible position and the lowest cost per click. Writing multiple advertisements and making sure that your ad copy is well written and appealing is one of the most effective ways to improve your quality score. As mentioned earlier, your ad copy must directly relate to the keywords in...
Follow through the process outlined in this chapter, experimenting with the expansion and contraction of your theme until you discover the best keyword opportunities for your service. Your priority is to find the most profitable and SE-friendly way to present your service on the Net. Next, pick the three concepts that you love the most and that you think would have some appeal for others -- this is your short list of Site Concept words (we'll refer to them as Site Concept keywords from now on.)
As you were researching your digital camera purchase, you stumbled upon several different camera brands. You probably learned a little bit about the various features and benefits of digital cameras too. Now, let's come up with a quick list of potential keywords we could use to evaluate the demand for digital cameras.
On a piece of paper (or use your word processor), write down 5 topics related to each one of your three concepts (including the Site Concept keyword itself). Each topic should be composed of only one or two words, three max. We'll call each of these topics a keyword. The term, keywords , includes both single words and multi-word phrases. When building a keyword list, never limit yourself to single words. Many people search for topics using multi-word keywords composed of two, or even three, words. Very few surfers enter four or more words, though. cactus (the first of the five words should be your Site Concept keyword) If you have already registered a SBI domain, then you also already know the theme or focus of your site. (i.e., your Site Concept). You don't need to do the 3 x 5 word exercise above. Instead, just concentrate on finding words (i.e., keywords) related to your Site Concept. Pull 5 -10 keywords out of your head to kick-start your keyword list.
The above examples only give a small sampling of the total search volume for keywords related to digital cameras. All we did was take one digital camera brand, one camera type, and one accessory, and we were able to generate a keyword list with over 200,000 monthly searches. Keep in mind that this search volume only represents one search engine. Could you imagine how high the monthly search volume would be if I included all digital camera brands, types, and accessories across all search engines I guarantee the number of searches would have totaled several million per month.
More advanced keyword research and analysis is discussed in Chapter 2. Research and analysis uncovers the key terms and phrases that Web users are searching for. This may be as simple as figuring out what terminology people are using when searching. Are people searching for seo or search engine optimization You can use a tool like Google Trends to discover trends in the popularity of different search queries.
Keywords are terms used to describe the essential attributes for a specific job. Including the right keywords in your resume is the only way your resume will be matched by a computer doing a keyword search, and in this day of electronic databases and applicant-tracking systems, keywords are very important.
The Google AdWords Keyword Tool is very useful for evaluating the competition on Google. The tool can be found at Figure 2.2.3.c Google Keywords Tool Figure 2.2.3.c Google Keywords Tool This screenshot shows related keywords, advertiser competition, and search volume. As you can see, the generic keywords have more competition and higher search volume, while the more specific keywords have less competition, and less search volume. There is definitely a great deal of opportunity with some of the low-volume keywords related to digital cameras.
Maybe your autoresponder server crashes. and you lose your list. Or you're blacklisted because some hysterical spam-a-phobic forgets they signed up for your ezine five different times, with five different email addresses. Or your PC crashes. and you don't have backups of your affiliate IDs, address book, or keyword lists. Or for some weird reason, your favorite search engine strips you off the first page of results and banishes you to nowhere-land. Second, remember that prevention is always more fun than a cure. Backing up data, web sites, documents, affiliate IDs, keyword research, and contact lists is about as exciting as watching paint dry. But it's smart. And it sucks a lot less than rebuilding, re-researching, or re-inventing everything from scratch.

To determine how many pages are showing up in the natural search listings, all you need to do is type your keywords into the search box of your favorite search engine. If your keyword contains more than one word, you should place the entire keyword in quotes( ). This example shows only 182,000 results. That's only 9 of the results that were displayed for the more generic keyword slr camera . Just as I had pointed out earlier in the paid search example, there is less competition for more specific keywords.
An excellent and tested way to search the market is through keyword research. We have to find which keywords are searched the most on the search engine. Another way is to visit customer review sites. Let us look at both these methods one by one. Another great tool which I highly recommend is WordTracker Wordtracker has compiled a database of search terms from various metacrawlers on the Internet. When you enter keywords, Wordtracker will tell you how often people search for them and how many competing web sites use those keywords. Then click on Keyword Selector Tool Now you have a clear picture as to the how many times your keywords were searched for in Overture. Let us now get down to the concept of competition. If there is competition in your niche you need to know what the others are doing as well. This helps you define your own strategies and action plans. Unfortunately, this last tool is no longer available online. Only WordTracker will help you measure the competition in your...
As shown in Figure 4.1, there are two ways to focus on driving awareness to your iPhone iPad app. The first way is on the App Store itself, by specifying relevant keywords for searches and deploying other techniques to make your app stand out. The second way is by driving traffic to your own product website and then sending visitors to go to the App Store to buy your app. You will have more influence on driving traffic to your own site than on the App Store. Both of these areas are discussed in greater detail in other parts of this book. However, the focus of this chapter is that identifying your target audience is a vital step to achieving sales success of your app. It also saves you time and money if your marketing efforts are aligned more closely to your most likely buyer.
OK, you are now in the MASTER KEYWORD LIST display for temporary.com. Enter your 15 keywords into the MASTER KEYWORD LIST for the temporary.com domain. Remember those 15 keywords that you just brainstormed (5 for each Site Concept) Let's enter them into the MASTER KEYWORD LIST display. In the MASTER KEYWORD LIST display, you can either add new keywords ONE-BY-ONE or you can brainstorm and research 100 or more related keywords all at once. We'll cover brainstorming tomorrow. For now Enter your first Site Concept keyword into that box (delete the Enter first keyword here ). In our example, you'd enter cactus here. ,
Your most important keywords + the names of the communities and regions you serve. Remember the fire safety articles Targeting profitable keywords within this theme will bring both local and global visitors to your site. While the global visitors won't hire you to clean their chimneys, they will follow your recommendations and click through to merchant partners -- your second income stream. For the local visitors who aren't yet clients, the free information is a valuable credibility builder, and brings them one step closer to hiring you. 2) Display plenty of opportunities for niche-related keyword targeting.
In Step 4 you did keyword research and came up with a list of keywords phrases relevant to your campaign. When setting up your Google AdWords campaign, Google requires that you first write the ad, and then choose your keywords and phrases. However, there is a better way. I recommend that you first select your keywords and phrases and then write your ads. This allows you to write your ads in accord with the keywords you choose. I always research keywords first, then I write the ad and setup my Google AdWords Campaign. If you find yourself setting up your AdWords Campaign before you have had time to write ads or do keyword research, then only create a bogus ad, so you can move on to the next step. Return later to revise your Ad. In the keyword research step you grouped keywords into relevant groups. You'll want to write ads for each of these groups of keywords. Then when you bid on keywords, correspond your ad to its group of keywords. You Utilizing your keywords is one simple method to...

Once there, you simply enter a word or phrase related to your topic and the Keyword Selector tool returns related searches that include the term you typed in the search box. The results also include the number of times that term was searched for during the previous month. Keyword Selector Tool I make quick notes about other ideas that come to mind as I use the Overture Keyword Selector tool. I keep this part of the process fairly quick because Overture's Keyword Suggestion tool is limited in scope, and the number of searches it returns isn't always reliable. An alternative to the Overture Keyword Selector, is the Pixelfast tool which incorporates both the Keyword Selector and Overture's advertisers' maximum bid prices. It is also free to use and is available at
WordTracker's Top 300 Surge Report - These are the top 300 queries from the 24 hours prior to the report's issuance, and taken from 5,587,112 queries, which represents the complete queries from the largest Metacrawlers on the web (Metacrawler Dogpile etc.) for the last 24 hours.
Can I build a decent keyword list about this topic In the next training module, Step-3, you will learn about the strategic importance of keywords . Keywords are the exact phrases that people type into search engines. Amazingly, you will be able to get an exact count of EVERY SINGLE KEYWORD PHRASE entered into the major search engines for the previous 60 days. You should consider the DEMAND for these keywords (your potential topics) and keywords that may be related to your potential topics before making any decisions. After all, there's no sense in having a great site on men's bow ties , - even if there ARE several good affiliate programs available, - if only 6 people searched that subject in the previous month. Remember what I stressed earlier A little time and research will go a long way here and will save you both time and money in the long run.
Now you might be thinking that there is no way youll be able to compete with a company able to pay 221 per click on a
You won't have to bid those amounts on your keywords to be competitive. I certainly don't spend that kind of money on pay-per-click (PPC) keyword terms, and yet my dating sites consistently return between 4 and 5 dollars to every dollar I spend on PPC advertising. At this point in our research, we are primarily concerned with the value of the topic, and high bid amounts for popular keywords are an indicator of great value. Your task is to build HUGE lists of high-demand, low-competition keywords. Building an extensive keyword list is crucial to your site's success. More than 'extensive', your list should also be 'exhaustive'. Leave no stone unturned in your search for phrases that surfers might use to find your site. Wordtracker's Competition Search - To more quickly assess the competition across several pay per click search engines, I again like to use Wordtracker's service. Using the KEI, or Keyword Effectiveness Indicator component, you can determine which keywords in...
Put your keyword list together first, then draft your ad. 10. Test two ads at the same time. Google AdWords allows you to run two different ads with your keywords which will enable you to compare ad performances. Keep the ad with the higher CTR and replace the other ad with a new one. If your keywords are negative-matched, your ad won't show if the user's search includes that word. Add the negative character (-) in front of the keyword you'd like to exclude. For example, if your keyword is satellite dish and your negative keyword is -free, your ad will not show when a user searches on free satellite dish. 16. Create a separate Ad Group and Ads for your misspellings list, another one for your abbreviated keyword phrases, and so on.
This is when you put Overture's Search Term Suggestion Tool and a spreadsheet to work, and build a list of keywords and phrases relevant to your proposed topic. Building an extensive keyword list is crucial to your site's success. More than 'extensive', your list should also be 'exhaustive'. Leave no stone unturned in your search for phrases that surfers might use to find your site. Because of my personal success with dating sites, I often gauge a topic's potential by comparing its primary keyword against the keyword 'dating'. 'Dating' usually receives around three hundred thousand searches per month at Overture and its partners. Checking the results below, there were over 221 thousand searches for the term 'wine' and related phrases in just one month. As you start to fine-tune your ideas about what you will offer at your Web site, you can also start to fine-tune your keywords.
You may however prefer to use AltaVista, as their returns also show a number of related keywords and phrases on the results page. Now, before you go to all the trouble of researching and noting the number of competing sites on your spreadsheet for each of your keywords, please read the following. Here is a short sample of how your market keyword research spreadsheet might look at this point. The software is called 'Niche Finder'. I plugged in the term 'wine making' and in less than five minutes the software had generated a big list of related key phrases, which were found on the most relevant pages on the Internet. A list typically consists of over 200 new key phrases, and each of them may give you a valuable business idea, a possible product name, target market, or at least a good keyword for your web page. And a good business idea can make a fortune for you
Creating search-engine-optimized Web pages is the core effort of a successful Internet marketing campaign. Taking care of technical on-site factors such as file names, title tags, meta description tags, meta keyword tags, and meta robots tags is crucial to making sure the search-engine spiders can determine the relevance of your Web site. Think of search-engine spiders as robots that read the content of your Web pages. Optimizing your content with header tags and other text modifiers allows you to stress the main ideas and topics that your content covers. Optimization of images is important for those Web browsers that do not Optimize Meta Keyword Tags Meta keyword tags allow you to indicate the relevance of a particular Web page to certain keywords and phrases. Although many search engines ignore this tag, some likely still use it in their ranking algorithms. For that reason alone, you want to implement this tag on all your Web pages. The keywords and phrases contained in your meta...
Why is this second search worthwhile doing Because, as you'll see later on, you'll create content pages with topics that focus upon your HIGHEST PROFITABILITY keywords. And PROFITABILITY is partly determined by the DEMAND for your keywords (i.e., how many times people search for them).
Goal-of-the-DAY Use the SUPPLY and DEMAND window to build a MASTER KEYWORD LIST, fully researched, of 5 HIGH-PROFITABILITY KEYWORDS for window, to grow your MASTER KEYWORD LIST ever bigger, ever more PROFITABLE. This yields the raw material for new Keyword-Focused Content Pages. It's time to brainstorm and prune. Initially, you'll brainstorm as many related Keyword-Focused topics as possible that are related to fashion. Then you'll prune out the low-profit-potential ones.
Because, as you'll see later on, you'll create Web pages with topics that focus upon your HIGHEST PROFITABILITY keywords. And profitability is partly determined by the DEMAND for your keywords (i.e., how many times people search for them). OK, you have a good idea of what your potential visitors want. You have the DEMAND for a variety of keywords related to your potential theme (some of which will become your HIGH-PROFITABILITY Keyword-Focused Topics for your content pages on your site). And you have decided to continue researching with the keyword ab exercise. Now it's time for
Before I register a domain name or build a website I spend a lot of quality time doing keyword research. This keyword research helps me to better understand the products and services I'm promoting, and helps me to plan my website and marketing strategy. It's not only important to find as many keywords as possible, but it's also critical that you focus on the right keywords. One of the biggest factors that have contributed to my success as an affiliate is keyword research. The more (good) keywords you have in your list, the more opportunities you have to drive targeted traffic to your website, which will lead to more commissions. This section will show you how to build and manage a highly-targeted and comprehensive keyword list.
Not too surprisingly, a number of companies have popped up to supply specific keyword services for a fee. The best of these is WordTracker.com. They're not bargain basement, but you get what you pay for. They'll give you all the keywords you need and in my experience, they're a sound investment. As you make up your list of keywords, bear in mind that it's also worth looking at key phrases. It's quite possible that a user looking to buy flowers online might search for red roses or cheap bouquets as well as just flowers . Key phrases are often overlooked by competitors, so you've got a pretty good chance of getting a high placement with the right combination. Don't worry too much about the competition though. Some people will tell you that you're better off trying to find keywords that no one In my experience, that's a waste of time. If your competitors are using certain keywords, it's because they know they work. And if any of your visitors found your site using irrelevant keywords,...
Repeat the same process for each of the exercise -containing keywords that you found in your DEMAND WINDOW. Yes, seriously, do a search for each keyword. It is a bit tedious, but the research will pay off in spades. But first. before you do that, create a MASTER KEYWORD LIST. I recommend that you do this either in a simple text file or via a database or spreadsheet program. A database or a spreadsheet will speed things up and provide you with extra functionality. If you don't know anything about databases or spreadsheets, a fast way to get up and running is with FileMaker Pro. It's a friendly, easy-to-learn database program. Your particular needs are simple, so it won't take long for you to create a MASTER KEYWORD LIST that can be sorted and searched, and that can warn you of duplicate keywords.
In the past I used Wordtracker and Overture's Search Term Suggestion Tool exclusively to generate huge lists of keywords and phrases related to my intended topic. I would then transfer all that data into an Excel spreadsheet and write titles and descriptions for my pay-per-click advertising campaigns. 1. Adword Analyzer - Particularly handy in Adword Analyzer are the clickable keywords which allow you to 'drill down' and search further on a specific term. Adword Analyzer also produces links to existing advertising campaigns for each keyword phrase returned.
Repeat the same process for each of the fashion -containing keywords that you found in your DEMAND WINDOW. Yes, seriously, do a search for each keyword. It is a bit tedious, but the research will pay off in spades. Before you do those searches, create a MASTER KEYWORD LIST. I recommend that you do this either in a simple text file or via a database or spreadsheet program. A database or a spreadsheet will speed things up and provide you with extra functionality.
And, of course, it's always a good idea to check the SUPPLY and DEMAND of other non-abdominal exercise-related keywords on your list Continue on for the remaining keywords, until you have completed all six columns for all of your HIGH-PROFITABILITY exercise -containing keywords. I can't over-emphasize the importance of your MASTER KEYWORD LIST. Your entire site, including its most profitable directions, lies in this blueprint. Please do this. 2) Master Keyword List (MKL) -- This is the analytical, left brain part of BI . It is where you search, manipulate, analyze and delete your keywords.
Compare keywords are some of the best keywords for affiliates to target. Affiliates can add a lot of value to an online shoppers experience by providing reviews and information about specific products or services. Here are some examples of Compare keywords you should target
Repeat the process for all of your HIGH-PROFITABILITY exercise -containing keywords. For example, let's say that you want to write a page about how to price products. This page is meant to show e-commerce merchants how to price new products. You decide that price is a good keyword. Use.
As you work with your keyword list, you may decide that you'd like to delete one or more. To delete a word, just click on the Id button. Click on the to find keywords that match certain criteria (ex., to find words with a Sometimes I worry about providing powerful functions like this. I just know I'm going to get at least one nasty e-mail asking me why I didn't warn you that you could accidentally delete all your keywords, plus lose the mortgage on the house. So please
The PPCs have relevancy standards that prevent merchants from bidding on misleading keywords. So if your searcher types in a content-related keyword phrase, only pages addressing that content may appear in the listings. With the big merchants effectively out of the way (since they don't provide content, only products), that means top bids for content related keywords are fairly cheap.

If we combine search volume and gender data, we can generate a shoe-related top 10 keyword list for both men and women (see Figures 3.8 and 3.9). By volume, the top three shoe-related terms men search for are running shoes , Jordan shoes , and Nike shoes the top three shoe-related terms women search for are Payless shoes , running shoes and DSW shoes .
Slot in search results, the best place to start is by looking at the competition. Use one of the popular search engines and type in keywords that members of your target market would typically use to look for your artist or music. Don't be concerned about thinking of all relevant keywords at first that will come later. As the results of the search are displayed, visit the first few listings to see if they are indeed targeting the same market and are considered competitors. You can actually use these web sites to improve your own. Look at the keywords they use by using your browser's view source function to look at their meta tags. Look at the text appearing on their home page and the titles used. Consider any words or phrases that you find on these sites that you may not currently be using or have thought about. Internet consultant Bruce Clay stated, Proper Search Engine Optimization requires that you beat your competition, so knowing the keywords and criterion used by your competition...
So I'll intercept them when they search for, let's say, fulfillment-related topics, provide them with great content about fulfillment, and then also introduce them to the concept of pricing. So let's choose General Keywords, like catalog and fulfillment and sales and customer service (just to pick a few). Are you thinking
By now, you should have identified a nice tight service-related theme topic for your site. And you very likely have enough profitable keywords to keep you busy building pages for a while. But What if you need more HIGH-PROFITABILITY keyword topics What if you have not identified a true winning theme to build your service site around What if there do not appear to be sufficient keyword opportunities within your service's theme Well, you could broaden the scope your site somewhat. However For that reason, it's important not to stray too far from your concept -- i.e., stay tied to your basic Concept Keyword which is exercise in our ongoing example.
Only one thing to do before you finalize the Site Concept Concept Keyword -- and that's when you choose the domain name of your Theme-Based Content Site Grow a list of good merchants with affiliate programs who have product lines that fit. It used to take me several different tools and steps to determine which keywords I should bid on. Now I have one tool that does it all. I enter a keyword into the application and it shows me a list of all related keywords and how often each was searched for and how many campaigns there are running for each keyword on Google AdWords and Overture. You need to see this
In Wordtracker's Step-1 below, you simply enter the name of the industry or topic you would like to research. Those words that appear in the RIGHT window are more specific and become the basis of your eventual keyword list. 3. In the right window you will see the precise phrases - as well as their exact count - compiled from a search, by Wordtracker, of many of the largest search engines in the prior month. These are the keywords that make the difference to your rankings when strategically placed throughout your site - even if they are misspelled. NOTE In fact, you may HAVE to avoid using some of your very best keywords due to their massive popularity. So it's better to take too many at this point, than not enough. In Step-5, Add Keyword-Focused Content, you will be shown how-to do a backwards link check at Google before deciding whether to build a keyword-Focused page around any particular keyword. The procedure you will learn, -which is largely unknown, - will allow you to predict...
Your domain name is one of the primary factors that search engines use to rank your Web site. Selecting a domain that relates directly to the theme of your Web site increases the likelihood that search engines such as Google and Yahoo will rank your Web site for related keywords. Generally speaking, you have two options Choose a domain name that contains the keywords and phrases that your Web site is about, or choose a domain name that is brandable. Many Web sites, such as Amazon and eBay, began with generic or obscure domain names to build successful Web sites and brand awareness. Such an approach can be more difficult in the beginning when trying to rank for certain search terms, because the search engines do use your domain name as a ranking factor.
Think specific keyword phrases not keywords . Due to the extreme amount of competition for general terms in the search engines, if your keyword phrases are too general it is very unlikely you will rank well in the search engines. You stand a far better chance to You should try to come up with as many keyword phrases as you can think of that relate to the page you are optimizing. Try asking a few friends and family what they would search for when searching for a site like yours. Check out your competition for ideas. Do a search using keywords that you already know you want to target and click through on the top sites that come up. Once on the site, view the source HTML code and view the keywords they have in their Meta tags. Searching competitive sites' Meta tags will give you many more ideas. Make sure to only use keywords that relate to YOUR site or page. To view the HTML code, simply click the View at the top of your web browser then select Source , or Page Source . You should...
Once you have completed planning the layout of your Web site and decided on its overall structure, your next step is to divide the Web site into different categories, or themes. A well-thought-out thematic structure helps maintain a clear delineation between the different content areas of a Web site. In order to achieve high search-engine rankings, you need to appear as an authority on these main topics. Therefore, it is beneficial to design your Web site in well-organized and structured themes that do not confuse users or search engines. An additional benefit for organizing your Web site in this way is that it allows you to target specific keywords and phrases within each particular section.
Now, as you follow through Wordtracker's step 4, you will check for the number of pages on the Net that will be competing with your page for a particular keyword on your keyword list.
