My Vertex42 The Excel Nexus Review

Highly Recommended

Some users might complain that the default interface is more complicated than it needs to be. If you just panicked grab a quick drink and relax because this baby has a full customizable interface.

However, Vertex42 The Excel Nexus is a fairly good program considering the standard and depth of the material it provides. In addition to being effective and its great ease of use, this software makes worth every penny of its price.

Product diversity in high technology

Second, standard products should be distinguished from differentiated products, which are adapted to the customer's wants. Standard products are defined by a limited number of precise characteristics and, therefore, allow for mass production. Examples include computer memories, microcomputers, standard application software (spreadsheets, word processing), and laser disc readers.

Is there Sufficient Demand

This is when you put Overture's Search Term Suggestion Tool and a spreadsheet to work, and build a list of keywords and phrases relevant to your proposed topic. By way of example, when I created my dating site back in 1998, and started advertising with pay per click search engines, I built a spreadsheet consisting of a couple of thousand search terms related to my site. After sorting through all the keywords revealed during your research, and deleting those pertaining to specific wine regions, retailers, music groups (e.g. April Wine) and other terms that are irrelevant to your topic, your spreadsheet might look something like this

One of the great benefits of e-mail, in common with other forms of direct marketing, is its accountability. This book presents a simple Excel spreadsheet-based model that you can use for setting objectives and comparing the effectiveness of different tests or campaigns. Figure 1.1 shows the framework used for this model.

Step 8 Track your campaigns

Below is a spreadsheet that I use to track a campaign I have been running for www.amazon.de (German Amazon). You can find this spreadsheet on the Google Cash Resource Website and can use it as a template to create your own. Every few days I log in to Amazon.de's affiliate tracking website and research m tracking spreadsheet, xts m tracking spreadsheet, xts Next, I log in to AdWords to see how much my ads cost. I plug that number into my spreadsheet. The spreadsheet calculates how much profit I made that day by subtracting my costs from my commissions. You can create a spreadsheet for each campaign. Keep track of them for a while and then eliminate campaigns that are losing money or are not performing well. And nurture your cash cows. The spreadsheet above is from my Amazon.de Campaign during the 2002 Christmas Holiday Season. I bought Google AdWords for the keywords amazon, amazon.de, and a few more, for Germany only. When someone in Germany searched for amazon on Google, my Ad...

before you do that, create a MASTER KEYWORD LIST. I recommend that you do this either in a simple text file or via a database or spreadsheet program. A database or a spreadsheet will speed things up and provide you with extra functionality. Next best choice is a spreadsheet. Both a database and spreadsheet will speed things up and provide you with extra functionality. If you don't know anything about databases or spreadsheets, a fast way to get up and running is with FileMaker Pro. It's a friendly, easy-to-learn database program. Your particular needs are simple, so it won't take long for you to create a MASTER KEYWORD LIST that can be sorted and searched, and that can warn you of duplicate keywords. If the idea of a database or spreadsheet scares you, simply stick with a text list. It's a bit inefficient so it will take you a little longer, but it will do the job just fine.

Still More Market Research Tools

In the past I used Wordtracker and Overture's Search Term Suggestion Tool exclusively to generate huge lists of keywords and phrases related to my intended topic. I would then transfer all that data into an Excel spreadsheet and write titles and descriptions for my pay-per-click advertising campaigns.

Profit Potential Lets Do the Math

In the following example, you'll see how I use an Excel spreadsheet to calculate profitability. You can use a piece of paper and a calculator, but using a spreadsheet makes the job much easier. If you are new to Excel and want more detailed instruction on its use than is offered below, I recommend that you grab a copy of Richard Kraneis' ebook, 'The World's Shortest Excel Book' at

After collecting keywords and phrases relevant to your topic at Overture, input the keywords and number of searches per month into an Excel spreadsheet, under columns labeled 'Keywords' and 'Demand' as shown in the following table. This tells the spreadsheet to add up all the numbers in the column from cell 'B2' to 'B22'. So if you had 399 keywords in your list, the formula would be sum(b2 b400), which takes the row of headers into account.

Business intelligence the basics

Often consisted of a spreadsheet of sometimes useful but often useless statistics without a clear methodology for interpretation. As club kids were moving from the glam rock of the late 1980s to electronic house in the 1990s, the business world saw a shift toward client server systems, data warehousing and data mining. In this era, some companies recognized the value of intelligence gathered on a regular, often daily basis, such as transactional records, customer enquiries and complaints. Data analysis tools emerged, most of which were based on SQL (Structured Query Language), and there was an increased interest in standardizing information-gathering, reporting and dissemination methodologies.

Gates at the Barbarian

Head-to-head competitions, it almost invariably was an also-ran to the top-ranked product, Microsoft Excel. WordPerfect's botched release of its first Windows-based word processor had landed the one-time ruler of the category in third place. First and second places were usually fought over by Microsoft Word and Lotus's AmiPro. Microsoft PowerPoint and Lotus Freelance usually struggled for the business presentation graphics crown, but the spreadsheet and word-processing elements were the most important factors in a buyer's decision. Advantage Microsoft. Both Borland and WordPerfect attempted to fight back with competing office suites assembled from each other's respective products (with SPC's faded Harvard Graphics thrown into the mix), but they were unsuccessful. Not surprisingly, the new suites lacked the integration of Microsoft Office, but more important, they were bundles of second- and third-class programs competing against top-ranked contenders. Lotus SmartSuite faced a similar...

The Fall of the Barbarian Empire

In addition to being confusing, the promotion proved to be a sales killer. It turned out that someone who wanted the Windows version of the product had little interest in the DOS version, and vice versa. Many people took advantage of Borland's generosity to help friends and neighbors handle their spreadsheet needs with a leftover Quattro for Windows or DOS. As one observer noted, WinDOS worked like a competitive upgrade's evil twin. The promotion was hastily canceled, and Kahn, in the spirit of Le Roi can do no wrong, fired a few of the marketing personnel who had advised against the whole fiasco.10 Complicating things further was that as its woes with Quattro grew, Borland saw its clout with the U.S. channel sharply diminish. Quattro had often functioned as a loss leader for Borland, a lever it used to ensure distributors and resellers also carried generous quantities of the company's more profitable but lower-selling databases. As the spreadsheet's sales and profitability collapsed,...

Sets Realistic Sales Targets

A marketing plan helps you set realistic sales goals. After you have done a thorough analysis of the scope of your market and your competitors, you are in a position to do more accurate sales forecasting based on your intended promotions. You need to be able to visualize your sales goal in an easy-to-track spreadsheet. Apple provides daily, weekly, and monthly sales reports for you to track your progress. These reports can be easily downloaded into an Excel spreadsheet for viewing.

Now That You Know Do You Know When to Know It

Failure to study and thus understand the context of the market has led software companies to frequently take the experience of hardware and misapply it to software, almost always to bad effect. Over the years, the lite word processors, spreadsheets, databases, suites, and graphics packages have not taken the market by storm. Why Well, software is not carried around (at least not where it can be seen) and applications But for literally over a quarter of a century, the press has bemoaned product bloat in software. For more than a quarter of a century, different software companies have attempted to build smaller software products. And for more than a quarter of a century, customers have voted with their dollars almost every time for more powerful software products stuffed with every extra strip of chrome and every last power option available. And since software is very cheap (if you doubt this, compare the cost of buying a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation package, and database...

The Best Generals Hire the Best Generals

But then you look at the history of developers in relation to the companies they either founded or worked for, and the picture again becomes decidedly mixed. The SuperSet helped damage Novell. The WordStar programming team drove the final stake through MicroPro's heart. Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston, developers of the first blockbuster desktop application, VisiCalc, engaged in a foolish and ruinous fight with the publisher of the product, VisiCorp, that destroyed the spreadsheet cash cow for both companies. Apple's developers made a 20-year career of running amok from time to time. It's probably fair to state that programmers and developers help kill and hurt as many companies as they start.

MS-Excel - MS-Excel to the rescue AGAIN Really, by using a spreadsheet you can organize your data exactly in a way that makes sense to you. Add a column, delete a column or widen and narrow the columns. Add as many parameters as you like. Make the fonts any size and color that you see fit. Link your affiliate information spreadsheet to your conversion rate information spreadsheet and access either with a single click. Here are the columns that I have labeled on my affiliate information spreadsheet.

Putting it All Together

To determine your keyword ROI create a new spreadsheet with four columns keyword, cost, revenue, and profit. You will then use the data from your keyword cost report and detailed commission report to populate the spreadsheet. I have included a screenshot to illustrate this Figure 6.3.b Sample Excel Spreadsheet Download the Keyword ROI spreadsheet Using this spreadsheet example, I can quickly see what keywords are making money and what ones are losing money. I can then take action and adjust my keyword bids accordingly.

Death by Doppelganger Micro Pro

By 1983, WordStar's success had made MicroPro International the largest microcomputer software company in the world, with sales peaking that year at close to 70 million. During this period, MicroPro attempted to diversify into other markets, publishing InfoStar, Rubinstein's long-dreamed-of database product ChartStar, a business graphics product and even an unfortunate spreadsheet called CalcStar. (It was unfortunate because the product was infamous for its bugs. Until the product went to its well-deserved and unheralded demise, an entire row of the CalcStar workspace was nonfunctional, and internally the

In presenting fees, make it clear and easy for clients to understand how you arrived at your fees. Some consultants build elaborate spreadsheets to calculate their fees, which can cause clients to focus on the accuracy and detail of the spreadsheet instead of the fees. Remember, the client will likely be sharing your proposal with others who may not have the benefit of hearing your presentation directly. So make the pricing method clear.

Frenchman Eats Frog Chokes to Death Borland and Philippe Kahn

Building a consumer campaign around an arcane technical capability Borland's attempt to sell object technology to spreadsheet users and people who wanted to use their databases as simple filing systems was clearly misguided and a waste of money. Worse, the effort distracted the company from releasing their products with timely upgrades and new features their users wanted.

Managing Your App Marketing Activities

You should also set up an accountability system. This can be part of your app marketing plan where you keep track of initiatives. Or you can set up a simple Excel spreadsheet that lists the app name, date, action, cost, target completion date, date completed. and results. By managing your app marketing activities and being accountable for them, you'll be well on your way to actually putting the marketing strategies in motion. An example of such an accountability system is shown in Table 22.1. Marketing Campaign Tracking Spreadsheet

I use it because once I've input formulae to calculate monthly totals, increases and declines, and conversion rates, I never have to do that math again. After that, I simply enter the raw data, and the spreadsheet does the calculations. You may use any spreadsheet you are comfortable with, or you might prefer to use a calculator to do the math instead. That's up to you.

Unfortunately, Yahoo does not offer tools like Dynamic Keyword Insertion, which would eliminate a lot of the hassles of submitting new keyword campaigns. However, Yahoo does offer a bulk submission feature, which allows you to submit your keyword ads using a spreadsheet rather than their awkward web-based form.

This is the amount leftover that you can use to spend on that new Mercedes um AFTER you pay your taxes

Case study 122 central training college

When asked if they thought it was a good idea for a recruitment agency to be opened in the college, 89.6 said that it was. The most frequent reason given for the idea being perceived as a good one was the belief that the service would be specifically designed for the students of the college. It was thought that an agency in the college might have more flexible consulting times. This flexibility would enable the students to meet consultants on a more frequent and regular basis than would be the case with an agency situated several miles away. Of all the respondents, 37.9 said they would definitely use an agency based in the college and 48.3 said they would probably use it. Of the respondents, 10.3 usually lived outside the UK and, of the remainder, 80.8 were resident in London. The majority of respondents (96.5 ) were female. There were no respondents over 50 years of age and 34.5 were under 20 years of age. When it came to employment, 51.7 of the students classed themselves as...

An Offer You Cant Refuse

In Microsoft's defense, as with legal threats, tough talk in the industry is nothing new. Jim Manzi, after winning a look-and-feel judgment against Borland over its Quattro spreadsheet, had announced that he was going to perform a cashectomy on his foe.11 (The judgment was overturned on appeal and Lotus never got a dime.) Ed Esber of AshtonTate had publicly bellowed Make my day to companies daring to write dBASE language compilers. (Ashton-Tate never saw a dime either.) The difference is that when Jim Manzi and Ed Esber were shooting off

An Interview with Joel Spolsky

SMS Well, let's assume some of your top programmers walked in the door and said, We absolutely have to rewrite this thing from scratch, top to bottom. What's the right response JS What I learned from Charles Ferguson's great book (High St kes, No Prisoners Crown, 1999 ) is that you need to hire programmers who can understand the business goals. People who can answer questions like What does it really cost the company if we rewrite How many months will it delay shipping the product Will we sell enough marginal copies to justify the lost time and market share If your programmers insist on a rewrite, they probably don't understand the financials of the company, or the competitive situation. Explain this to them. Then get an honest estimate for the rewrite effort and insist on a financial spreadsheet showing a detailed cost benefit analysis for the rewrite.

Step 1 Assign Destination URLs to Your Keywords

Before you create your paid search ads, I recommend you take a few minutes to put your keywords and Destination URLs into a spreadsheet. When you are creating your ads, you can simply copy and paste the Destination URLs from your spreadsheet into your paid search campaign. Here is an example of a spreadsheet I created for this campaign Here is an example of a spreadsheet I created for this campaign You can download this sample spreadsheet by going to You may have noticed that a few of the keyword phrases from this spreadsheet example contain two words (online dating, meet men, and meet women). Whenever your keywords consist of two or more words you must combine the words with a + sign in your Destination URL. This is because URLs should not contain spaces.

Will Your Niche be Profitable

After all of the variables including keywords, demand, supply, and pay per click costs have been collected and copied into your spreadsheet, you can finally put some formulae to work and make some educated assumptions about how profitable your chosen topic might be. Then I transfer all that data into an Excel spreadsheet and write titles and descriptions for my pay-per-click advertising campaigns.

Who to Contact

Store the data in a database or spreadsheet from the start otherwise you'll end up having to retype it. The place to start compiling your list is from your own records of business associates and leads your sales team has built up over the years. Further company names and telephone numbers may be garnered from telephone and trade directories. Once you have listed these, you will have to contact each company to solicit the name of the individual you want. Sending questionnaires out of the blue to unnamed chief technical officers or to whom it may concern just multiplies its chance of hitting the trashcan, and you will never know who to contact when your program is launched.

Tracking Your Sales

There are many ways to keep track of your sales. Using orthodox methods such as keeping a paper journal is time consuming. Simple spreadsheet programs as well as basic accounting software are available at minimum or no cost. However, it is advisable to install advanced accounting software such as QuickBooks, Quicken, or Microsoft Money to keep track of your accounting.

Dogs View

Easy's other mark of distinction was its much-heralded TopView compatibility. TopView was IBM's first attempt to steer an independent course from Microsoft, and its introduction in 1985 had given Bill Gates a severe case of heartburn. TopView was a shell that added rudimentary cut-and-paste capabilities between programs as well as multitasking to DOS. Multitasking would allow a user to, for instance, call up WordStar while recalculating a spreadsheet in Lotus 1-2-3. Unfortunately,

Barbarian Conquests

After Ansa and Paradox, Borland purchased the Surpass spreadsheet from Seymour Rubinstein of WordStar fame,5 renamed it Quattro, and entered the spreadsheet market with barbarian zest. As part of his slash-and-burn tactics, Kahn launched what became known as a competitive upgrade promotion against Lotus, which had lagged in releasing its new 3.0 version of 1-2-3. The competitive upgrade works by offering the user of another product your product at a reduced price in return for the user ostensibly turning in her current product a desirable marketing twofer because the upgrade increases your installed base while simultaneously decreasing your competition's. Quattro's pricing was initially less than the 495.00 median for spreadsheets, but as with Paradox, by 1990 it was repriced to match industry standards. The competitive upgrade was kept sharp and at hand in Borland's promotional arsenal, and periodically the company launched one when it spotted an opportunity. Wielded in the hands of...

Breakeven Analysis

Using an Excel spreadsheet can help you figure out these calculations quite easily and figure out your own breakeven and contribution margin. An example using our 4.99 productivity app is shown in Figure 11.1. An Excel spreadsheet helps us to easily calculate our breakeven and margin for our 4.99 app.

The Zen of Marketing

When the 1.0 version shipped in 1987, PC Magazine, at the time the most influential PC-oriented publication in terms of the impact of its reviews, stated that Microsoft Corp. has just unleashed a spreadsheet that makes 1-2-3 look like a rough draft. Most of the other reviews were just as laudatory, and all made much of the WYSIWYG functionality of the product. Microsoft has been widely criticized for not being an innovative publisher, but in this it differs little from its major competitors. Apple hijacked the GUI interface concept from hapless Xerox and made it a commercial success. Lotus became a major power via 1-2-3, a high-powered knockoff of the original VisiCalc. Borland made its initial splash in the industry with Turbo Pascal, a low-priced, high-performing language derived directly from .NET father Anders Hejlsberg's COMPAS Pascal. Borland grew rapidly during the 1980s on the strength of Turbo Pascal but then became a major player by buying the...

Application while your requirements are unique. A gap analysis can help you measure what's missing from each vendor's functionality. The form of analysis doesn't have to be sophisticated. List all required functions down the left side of a spreadsheet and all the vendors left to right across the top. Enter a rating against each function for each vendor. You could use a simple Yes-No rating system or a High-Medium-Low rating accompanied by a brief explanation. If the analysis needs more granular demarcations, use colour codes, or ratings systems like Excellent-Good-Average-Poor-No Opinion and 1 strongly disagree, 2 disagree, 3 neutral, 4 agree, and 5 strongly agree.

Mobile Code Review

Before style sheets were developed, Webmasters used tables, much like a spreadsheet or a grid in Excel, to organize a Web page. The code of the Web page included specifications about the table width, row height, and other attributes of the grid. The actual grid was never visible by the Web visitors, but it did help the Web designer control the layout of the page.

Fabulous Fruit

Just as important as its hardware design was that Apple was the first system to run the first spreadsheet, VisiCalc, microcomputing's first killer application. A killer application is defined as a product so compelling you'll buy the necessary hardware just to run that particular piece of software. VisiCalc qualified for this rare and honored appellation once an accountant or CFO saw rows of numbers rippling across a spreadsheet grid as she automatically updated, that person was hooked for life She had to have the product. Management information systems (MIS, later to be called information technology, or IT) departments may not have cared for the loss of centralized control that these little boxes represented, but it's a well-known axiom of corporate life that you don't say no to the CFO. And once the CFO's secretary (now called an administrative assistant) tried a word-processing program, that was it. Apples, along with any other computer that ran VisiCalc, or some of its early...

10 My first experience with time sharing was with a financial modeling package called Finar used by my father to perform simulations of intermediate stock market swings. The cost to rent usage of the package was in the thousands of dollars. Finar was later purchased by MicroPro and in 1983 became a PC-based product called PlanStar, which was available for a few hundred dollars. A better known exemplar of this type of software was introduced a few years later under the name of Javelin. These data modeling packages take a top-down approach to spreadsheet creation. Though powerful, these products have never been widely accepted by the market.

Heart of Darkness

Ashton-Tate at its height in the 1980s was one of software's Big Three, the other members of the triumvirate being Microsoft and Lotus. Microsoft had DOS, Lotus ruled spreadsheets, and Ashton-Tate was the database king. The lucrative word-processing franchise was being fought over by MicroPro, WordPerfect, MultiMate, Microsoft with its Word product, and a host of smaller players. After a quick trademark search uncovered potential problems with the name Vulcan, the product was rechristened dBASE II. There was no dBASE I, but even in the early 1980s people were reluctant to buy 1.0 releases of software products. The company upped the cost of dBASE II to 695.00, a very competitive price for a product in its class and with its capabilities, and placed full-page magazine ads featuring a picture of a sump pump and the proclamation that while the pump might suck, dBASE didn't (or words to that effect). Sales took off, and by 1985 Ashton-Tate's revenues were more than 100 million a year and...

Check Statistics - When I started out, I checked my stats hourly, and sometimes more often. Now that I'm familiar with the income 'trends', I check my 'key partner sites' daily to see how my business is performing. I recommend that you check your statistics daily until you know what to expect day by day and week by week. Simply visit the statistics interface for each network and individual affiliate partner and input your total revenues into Quicken or a spreadsheet. Using Quicken will also keep you informed as to whether certain checks have become overdue.

After that, I simply enter the raw data, and the spreadsheet does the calculations. You may use any spreadsheet you are comfortable with, or you might prefer to use a calculator to do the math instead. That's up to you. In fact, you may find that eventually you look forward to 'adding things up' at the end of the month to get a clear picture of where your site stands.

Forecasting

The best computer model to create for your business is the cash flow forecast. In its simplest form, it is the sum of all your normal incomings and outgoings, totalled on a month-by-month basis and extrapolated into the future. This sounds easy, but where do you start A cash flow, as you would guess, is best calculated on a spreadsheet program, as it takes care of all the adding, subtracting, and carry forwards that are straightforward to do but devilishly easy to make a mistake on. As your business gets started, or your product is launched, you will be able to supplant fictions increasingly with facts. Update your future forecasts using the current week's figures. In time you'll learn the seasonal trends associated with your product typically people buy less during vacation months, and sales trail off before an upgrade and temporarily mushroom when it comes out. If you are unfamiliar with these just ask a friend about other software operations. Again, build these fluctuations into...

Diagrams

Sophisticated computer presentation packages now enable combined displays to be produced. These can be used either as a page for incorporation in a report or as an overhead transparency master. The example in Figure 12.8 captures the original spreadsheet data for expenditure on rent and housing, together with expenditure on food and drink, along with the scattergraph showing the relationship between the two. It also shows the distribution of both variables across Europe on a map as well as graphic pictures emphasising the products.

The Last Dance

There were many reasons for the ASP implosion. One was that people who actually used Web-based applications discovered that in terms of usability and power, the applications, well, sucked. The Web in the late 1990s and early 2000s wasn't designed to act as an application interface, but to allow you to jump around from file to file quickly. It did this well enough if you had a reasonably fast connection to the Internet, but it didn't do much else very well. People accustomed to responsive application interfaces, spreadsheets that raced through huge wads of numbers, and word processors that cut and pasted big blocks of text with alacrity
