How much will users pay for your product? Ask them openly and they'll try and give you the lowest possible figure that won't raise a laugh. The way costs are usually handled is to give respondents a choice of standard software pricing bands, as demonstrated in Figure 2-2.

It is advisable not to make the ranges too broad. You can arrive at a likely figure by averaging the answers. Alternatively, you can choose the most realistic price, bearing in mind your costs and their less optimistic expectations. Either method gives your people some ammunition to use if and when prospective purchasers question your prices.
