A lot of Help systems are little more than a dictionary, and some amount to even less. How often have you come across an entry such as the following?
Most problems that users encounter when coming to grips with a new program stem from not understanding the program's terminology. So it is vital that each term used in a program be fully described. Expecting users to understand what special meaning you have given to an otherwise ordinary term is unrealistic. You need to explain each term before you use it.
You should also include all the alternative terms that users may have in mind when looking for specific guidance. Alphabetical Help systems and manuals are no easier than any other to produce. They only look as if they are.
