Social events are better suited to keeping clients than gaining them. Go to any sporting event and most of the best seats are taken by corporates entertaining their clients. This is seen as an excellent way of bonding outside weekday working hours when no one's under pressure. The events chosen normally reflect the team or sport that the managing director is interested in. This isn't as egocentric or one sided as it seems. There's no point in inviting people to an ice hockey match if you know nothing about it; you'll be in danger of making a fool of yourself. Stay on safe ground where you have knowledge and passion.
Social events have been extended over the years to include the following:
♦ Cooking demonstrations
♦ Art galleries
You don't have to take over the Museum of Modern Art. You could consider a small local gallery or bakery.
